Even the pros get butterflies in their stomachs before a race. A trick to ease pre-race anxiety is warming up away from the start area. Find a quiet, peaceful spot that settles your nerves. Ride at a moderate pace for 15 minutes, followed by three 3-minute race-pace efforts with 3 minutes of recovery between. Then pedal easily to the start. You can do this same warm up on a wind trainer, too. Listening to music is a great way to eliminate any distractions. If you've done it right, you'll be sweating and be breathing heavily for a bit. Don't worry if your legs feel dead or tired, either. Just stick with your warm-up because it's the key to a good start and race.
